Dear Iris: I have been offered a wonderful promotion which would require traveling. Unfortunately, even though I would love the position, now’s the wrong time. Both my children are very active in school activities and I need to be available. My husband is very helpful, but his work sometimes has him gone for days or weeks at a time. I’m OK turning the position down, but I would like to be considered for the position at another time. How do I decline the position and not ruin my future with the company?

Dear Heather: Turning down a promotion is never an easy decision. However, as I’ve preached over the years, make sure your priorities are rock solid. Focus on the journey through life not the end result. Honesty is always the best policy. Sit down with your superior and explain your position. There maybe a way to take the promotion and not have to travel. Web conferencing has helped many employees tackle traveling issues. Give your supervisor your promotion timetable and see if it’s workable. If you’re a valued employee in the right company, they’ll work with you. If not, it maybe time to explore more family friendly companies for your future. Check out Working Mother Magazine’s Top 100 Family Friendly Workplaces.
